Dr Ross Perry is an amazing person whose first pet was a male green budgie called “Butch”, when young Ross was 6 years of age. Butch was soon paired with a male yellow faced blue budgie called Billy. Butch transitioned or died when he was 15 years of age, by which time Ross had an aviary of breeding budgies. Ross entered the Faculty of Veterinary Science University of Sydney in 1966 and passed his BSc(Vet) (Hons) degree in 1970 and his BVSc(Hons) degree in 1971 and started working the next day at Sylvania Heights Veterinary Hospital before moving to Forestville Veterinary
Hospital in Sydney where he practised as a small animal vet very interested in birds for 15 years. His interest in caring for sick and ailing birds was considered unusual by many of his colleagues, especially when there was at that time only 1 hour lecture on caged and aviary bird medicine and 1 hour on caged and aviary bird anaesthesia and surgery in the 5 year course. The demand for his help grew and he found it necessary to vacuum up snippets of information about diseases and treatment of birds from wherever he could around the world. He compiled some of these into his rst textbook “Vade Mecum 2, Diseases of Birds” published by the Post Graduate Committee in Veterinary Science, University of Sydney.
Soon after this Dr Ross Perry then became the rst person in Australia to gain membership of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists by examination about Caged and Aviary Bird Health, hence MACVSc(Avian Health). In due course he also became the rst person to be awarded Fellowship of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists by international examination on the subject of Caged and Aviary Bird Health FACVSs(Avian Health). The College name has been changed to the Australian New Zealand College of Vet Scientists, hence the quali cation is now FANZCVS (Avian Health).
He also served as an examiner of other vets for their Membership and Fellowship examinations in the subject of Caged and Aviary Bird Health.
Dr Ross Perry has presented many papers and training courses to his colleagues and others. Dr Ross Perry has named and described a series of diseases that a ect budgies. He is interested in holistic health and nonpharmaceutical methods of helping sick and ailing birds including budgies, especially when no drugs are known to help.
In recent years he has begun video recording aspects of his work and has posted more than 300 youtube videos on various aspects of bird health
care.
